The new Vienna State Opera Museum

Hanuschgasse 3 / Goethegasse, 1010 Vienna
Tues. – Sun., 10 a.m. – 6 p.m

For many, it is the greatest opera house in the world: 300 evenings a year, the Vienna State Opera offers excellent productions with a programme that changes daily. The Museum of the Vienna State Opera focuses on the 140 years of its existence.

Photos, costumes, models of stage settings, programmes and interesting documents provide a journey through the times. The permanent exhibition “Vienna State Opera – 140 Years of the House on the Ring, 1869 – 2009” starts with the first director of the new opera house, Franz Freiherr von Dingelstedt and ends with Ioan Holender, who was longer in charge than anyone else before.

In addition, you can find data on three terminals about every performance during the last 50 years: singers, conductors, directors, and stage and costume designers come to life, as do all the stage settings.

When the old opera theatre next to the Kärntnertore proved too small for the majority of 19th-century operas, it was decided to build a new, larger opera house on Vienna’s Ringstrasse, then in the process of being widened into a magnificent new boulevard. Eduard van der Nüll and August Sicard von Sicardsburg were the architects commissioned to carry out this project. The new the opera house on the Ring opened on 25 May 1869 with a performance of Mozart’s Don Juan. 140 years later, the Vienna State Opera Museum has documented the history of the opera house in an exhibition entitled “Vienna State Opera – 140 years of the opera house on the Ring. 1869 – 2009”.

Significant events such as world premieres and first performances, noteworthy productions and innovative musical interpretations are illustrated in the light of historic costumes, stage designs, handbills and other documents. The exhibition spans the entire gamut, from Franz Freiherr von Dingelstedt, the first director of the new opera house, to Ioan Holender, the longest-serving director in the history of the Vienna State Opera. There is a special focus on the great singers who made distinctive contributions to the artistic profile of the opera house. Loans like Erika Köth’s famous necklace and a mosaic of the singer Christel Goltz lend a very personal note to this section of the exhibition. The exhibition is curated by Therese Gassner.
Three information terminals developed and provided by SIEMENS Austria enable visitors to call up the casts and stage designs of any performance since November 1955. CDs, DVDs, photographs, books and merchandising items may be purchased in the foyer, where there is a cash desk, info point and a shop run by the Arcadia Opera Shop.
