The 125 year State Opera Jubilee in May 1994 offered not only the occasion for celebration and remembrance, it fostered and strengthened all efforts to secure the heritage of the house and its place in the future. This goal was served at great expense and involved a three and a half month long closing period in the fall of 1994 which allowed the renovation of the stage technical equipment and, at the same time, a guest tour to Japan.

In 1998 it was time to replace Rudolf Eisenmenger’s classical motif on the iron curtain with a contemporary subject. In early 1998 the firm Museum in Progress was entrusted with the creation of a series of 5 large, temporary paintings for the Staatsoper. The realization and attaching of the pictures takes place using a specially developed process so that both the Eisenmenger picture, as well as the new work, are guaranteed to be conserved in optimal condition. With the creation of an exhibition room in the Wiener Staatsoper this historical building assumes its responsibility towards contemporary artistic developments.
Numerous exhibits, mostly in the Gustav Mahler-Room of the Vienna State Opera, round out the offering for opera visitors.
In order to respond seriously with a well coordinated program to the theatrical needs of children, a children’s opera tent designed by the famous Austrian architect Wilhelm Holzbauer was built on the roof terrace of the Vienna State Opera. About 140 visitors can attend a performance in this new musical centre for young audiences and it has been absolutely overrun since opening in 1999.
