On the 1st of September 2001 a futuristic subtitling system was brought into service. Small monitors were installed on the backs of seats, in the balustrades of the balcony, boxes and gallery, as well as in the standing room supports, so that the audience can follow the subtitles of the opera in German or in English.
Formerly, for selected works (Enescu’s Oedipe, Halévy’s La Juive, Schönberg’s Die Jakobsleiter, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi und Britten’s Billy Budd) the Wiener Staatsoper offered an surtitle system which hung over the stage. The reaction of the audience to this system was overwhelmingly positive.
Advantages of the system
There are many advantages of the subtitle system. The monitor which is within close visual range can be either switched on or off according to the individual’s wishes without disturbing the person seated in the next door. The Wiener Staatsoper is the first European opera house to have the ‘Figaro Systems’ subtitling system installed. The Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Santa Fé Opera have been successfully using the system for some time.
Telekom Austria
The servicing and maintenance of the subtitle system are guaranteed by a large contribution from Telekom Austria.
